Wavy hair is naturally fascinating and if defining waves in a natural way, without weighing down the hair, can sometimes seem difficult, with the right tricks and products you can achieve amazing results. All in a few simple moves! So let’s see how to define wavy hair in 3 steps.
The first step in achieving defined wavy hair is to follow a proper washing and moisturising routine.
For this, the advice is to use a gentle, moisturising shampoo, preferably one without sulfates, to avoid drying out the hair and maintaining the natural balance of the scalp, and silicones, which tend to accumulate on the hair, weighing it down, especially suitable for wavy hair.
After shampooing, it is a good habit to apply a nourishing conditioner. Concentrate on the lengths and ends and leave it on for the necessary time (indicated on the packet) to allow the active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft. The conditioner also makes it easier to untangle knots without breaking the hair – in fact, when hair is wet it is much more fragile than when it is dry!
In addition to conditioner, depending on the need, i.e. considering the initial state of health of the hair and your lifestyle, you can treat yourself to a super moisturising and nourishing treatment with a mask rich in natural ingredients such as jojoba oil, shea butter and coconut oil.
Obviously, the use and choice of the mask to be applied is subjective: often wavy hair can have a very fine hair structure. In this case, it is better to avoid using masks that are too dense and full-bodied as they would, with their buttery and oily texture, weigh the hair down.
After carefully rinsing the hair to remove any residue of the product previously applied, it is time to move on to step 2: the styling phase.
Just as it is important to choose the right washing products, it is equally important to choose the right styling products.
Unfortunately, very often, those with wavy hair tend to find it difficult to enhance their waves in a natural way. This means that, for convenience, people tend to use irons and straighteners for everyday styling.
However, you should know that you can enhance your natural wavy hair with specific products specially formulated for this type of hair.
To emphasize the definition of wavy hair, in fact, it is preferable to choose light products, whether mousse, gel, leave-in conditioner or spray, which help the formation of waves without weighing them down.
To obtain defined, supple and luminous waves, it is important to apply the chosen product evenly, to hair that is still wet and not towel-dried, distributing it with a wide-toothed comb or, alternatively, using the fingers and passing them through the locks with the raking movement.
Once the styling is distributed, it is time to experiment with different styling techniques, such as scrunching or finer coiling, to maximise wave definition.
Finally, the third and final step: drying!
Gentle drying
After washing gently dab your hair with a microfibre towel to remove excess water, avoiding rubbing to prevent frizz and breakage, and then leave it to air dry.
If you prefer to use a hairdryer there are just two things to keep in mind: first, use a diffuser so that the heat caresses the hair evenly, and second, set the hairdryer to a low or medium temperature to avoid any heat damage.
