Wavy Hair 2a, 2b and 2c: how to identify them and care for them
Some call them wavy, others consider them already curly. The truth is, 2a, 2b and 2c curls exist in a special balance: they don’t have the tight spirals of 3a, 3b and 3c curls, but they already carry movement, energy and personality. Learning to recognize them is the first step in understanding how to treat them, because each subtype has specific needs and requires targeted techniques, especially when it comes to styling and drying.
2a curls: light and natural
Type 2a is the softest pattern in the type-2 category: it’s defined by loose, gentle waves that often lie flatter near the roots and gain shape only through the lengths. Hair is fine, silky to the touch, and naturally tends to fall straight — especially in humidity or when heavy products are used.
The secret for 2a curls is to encourage wave formation without weighing hair down. Work on very wet hair using gentle scrunching techniques and, if possible, diffuse upside down to support wave lift. Avoid rich leave-ins or layering products: a light touch is enough to maintain movement and definition.
2b curls: structured waves and natural volume
Type 2b marks the transition from soft waves to a more defined curl pattern: a clearly visible “S” shape, relatively flat roots and fuller lengths. The texture tends to be thicker than 2a, with more natural volume… and more frizz risk. The biggest challenge for 2b hair is ending up with puffy but poorly defined waves. You need the right balance between hydration and control. Techniques like “plopping” with a microfiber towel and section-by-section definition help maintain shape. It’s best to diffuse at medium temperature and avoid touching hair too much during drying to reduce frizz.

2c curls: defined spirals and bold character
Type 2c is the closest to true curls: deep waves starting at the roots, thick strands and significant natural volume. 2c curls sometimes form spirals similar to type 3a, often with raised cuticles and a natural tendency toward medium-to-high porosity.
Here, the priority is lasting hydration and definition. Styling 2c curls works best with techniques that set the curl pattern, such as “rake & shake” or extended scrunching. A diffuser is essential, ideally used at low speed and low heat.
Recommended products for everyday routine
Each subtype has specific needs, and product choice truly makes a difference. Here’s how to navigate type-2 hair care.
Products for 2a curls
Gentle, lightweight shampoos like 2Gentle®, ideal for cleansing without stripping hair of its natural lightness. Harsh cleansing can leave waves flat and dull.
Hydrating but quick-rinse conditioners to soften the fiber without weighing it down — the biggest risk is losing movement and ending up with limp, lifeless waves.
Light mousses or gels, used on very wet hair with gentle scrunching. This supports the wave pattern and keeps it elastic without stiffness. A styling spray like Just Waves also works beautifully.
Products for 2b curls
Balanced hydrating shampoos that clean without buildup. This curl type needs hydration, but not overly rich formulas.
Medium-rich conditioners, perfect for detangling and taming the typical 2b frizz.
Light leave-in conditioners such as Slide On, which smooth and discipline waves without weighing them down — a key step for controlling puffiness and inconsistent definition.
Medium-hold gels or lightweight curl creams, essential for giving structure to the “S” shape and keeping it throughout the day. Apply in sections to improve product distribution and reduce frizz.
Products for 2c curls
Nourishing, hydrating shampoos, since the thicker and often porous 2c fiber needs extra support starting from the cleansing step.
Rich conditioners, left on for a few minutes to soften the spiral and make definition easier.
Creamy, hydrating leave-ins, acting as a protective base against humidity and helping maintain curl elasticity.
Medium-to-strong hold gels or styling creams, crucial for sealing definition and keeping it longer. These products work like an anti-frizz “shield,” letting you enjoy full, long-lasting spirals.
