Curly hair has a language of its own: it thrives on elasticity, shape, and hydration.
But to unlock its full potential, you need to listen to it and give it exactly what it truly needs. The mask is one of the most important steps in any Curly Routine: an intensive treatment that works deep within the hair fiber, helping to improve softness, definition, and shine.
Choosing the right one — and applying it correctly — can radically improve the quality of your curls, day after day.
The wellbeing of curly hair is all about balance — specifically, the balance between water and lipids. Understanding whether your hair needs hydration or nourishment is the first step in choosing the right mask.
Hydrating masks
They help replenish the hair’s water content, improving elasticity and softness. These formulas contain humectant and hydrating ingredients that retain moisture within the fiber, helping curls maintain their shape, reduce tangles, and feel lighter. They’re perfect for dry, rough hair or curls that tend to lose definition after washing.
Nourishing masks
They deliver plant oils and butters that help rebuild the hydrolipidic film and reinforce the hair’s protective barrier. They make the fiber more compact and flexible, adding body and shine while helping control volume and frizz. Ideal for hair that is dry and lifeless, frizzy, or chemically treated, and in need of extra protection and structure.
Strengthening and repairing masks
These are recommended for bleached, damaged, or chemically weakened hair. They work on the inner structure, helping to improve the appearance of damaged areas, smooth the cuticle, and support the hair’s resilience over time.
Alternating between different types of masks helps maintain the right balance of softness, strength, and definition — preventing curls from becoming too flat or too stiff. The secret is to listen to what your hair is telling you: if it feels rough and dull, it needs hydration; if it breaks easily or looks lackluster, it’s time to nourish or strengthen it.
A hair mask for curly hair is a technical treatment that requires method and attention. Even the most effective product will lose its benefits if it’s not applied correctly.
1. After shampooing
Apply the mask immediately after shampooing, on wet, thoroughly cleansed hair. There’s no need to towel-dry: the water on the hair fiber actually helps distribute the product and allows it to penetrate more deeply. Just make sure the hair isn’t excessively dripping, so the formula remains concentrated and more effective.
2. Even distribution
Take an amount of product suited to your hair length and density (a walnut-sized amount is enough for medium hair) and apply it from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the scalp. For more precise coverage, you can use a wide-tooth wooden comb or simply your fingers, ensuring every section is well coated.
3. Processing time
Leave the mask on for 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your hair’s needs.
To boost the conditioning action, you can wear a thermal flaxseed cap (such as our Pro Conditioning Cap) for 15–30 minutes to encourage deeper absorption of the active ingredients into the hair fiber.
4. Customized rinsing
Rinsing time varies depending on hair texture and dryness:
-
if your hair is coarse and very dry, rinse for about 5 seconds to leave a light conditioning film;
-
if your hair is fine or easily weighed down, extend rinsing to 15 seconds or more, until all excess product is removed.
5. After the mask: conditioner, leave-in, and styling
To properly complete your Curly Routine, it’s always recommended to apply a detangling conditioner (such as LoveLock Balm) after masking: it helps seal the cuticles and enhances the conditioning effect.
Those with very dry hair can also follow with a leave-in conditioner after the rinse-out conditioner to maintain hydration longer and support curl definition. Only then should you proceed with styling, choosing curl-enhancing products specific to your texture.

Flaxseed thermal cap: thanks to the heat generated, it improves the absorption of masks and oils.
Every texture reacts differently to treatments. That’s why it’s essential to choose a mask suited to your hair structure (fine, medium, or coarse) to properly balance hydration, nourishment, and definition.
Fine texture
Fine hair has a more delicate fiber and tends to lose body and volume. It needs lightweight masks that hydrate without weighing curls down, helping them maintain elasticity and natural movement. Delight Milk is the ideal choice: its hydrating and protein-based formula helps rebalance the hair’s internal moisture, leaving curls soft and featherlight to the touch.
Medium texture
This is the most common and versatile texture: it alternates between well-hydrated areas and slightly dry zones. It requires a mask that combines hydration and nourishment to define curl shape while strengthening the fiber at the same time. Curl Switch perfectly meets this need: it helps improve hair density and delivers natural, long-lasting definition.
Coarse texture
Coarse hair is thicker and often more porous. It tends to retain less moisture and needs a constant supply of lipids to stay soft and manageable. Balby Cream is the most suitable mask: it provides intense nourishment, controls volume, and leaves curls full, elastic, and shiny.
And for those with afro hair, characterized by a naturally dense and porous texture, Glorification Mask from our AfroLove line provides the right mix of nourishment and deep hydration, improving elasticity and manageability.
Choosing your mask based on texture means respecting your hair’s natural characteristics and enhancing them with the most effective treatment. With the right Curly Routine — alternating products and processing times as needed — your curls won’t just look better: they’ll be visibly healthier, stronger, and happier!
